Day 22 – get rid of shortcut religion

So I am reading a book by Sue Monk Kidd  – “When the Heart Waits” and it is peeling away layers to reveal my true soul before God. Highly recommended. One little phrase that Sue mentioned in this book struck me between the eyes: Shortcut Religion Here’s a short excerpt: It was inevitable that the lure of the quick and easy would seep into religion. Our churches have filled up with people looking for sudden and painless paths to change and growth – for what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace”. A lot of us have spent our lives in shortcut religion. We haven’t been…

Day 21 – finding God in the pressure points of life

What happens in the pressure points of life? Those moments when you feel like you are ready to blow a fuse? When a mass of stressful issues pile up and just one more creates chaos. Who or what do you turn to? I journal. I journal to discover what the issues are. I journal to discover how I am dealing with the pressure points. I journal to uncover God’s fingerprints in play. That is why in the tough times – my journals are full of entries. God meets me in my journal pages. That is where I find Him the most…

Day 20 – still pondering milestones…

Still thinking about milestones – here’s a interesting quote to ponder today…   “Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are… not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff around a bit and simply never leave. Our lives are measured by these.” ― Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) suffragist, abolitionist, author and speaker. Dear God, Please help me to measure my life with the same measurements that you use. Please show…

Day 19 -the power of milestones

Milestone: a significant event or stage in the life, progress, development of a person or nation. I reached another milestone today – I’ve added another year to my life. I usually take time out at each milestone to pause, reflect and redesign (if need be) my life plan. One of the major questions that I ask myself is – How has God worked in the details of my life over the past year? How does a person answer that question? I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to remember what God did last month let alone a whole year! That is…

Day 18 -invite others to..come and see..

come-and-see-john-1

Nathanael said to him, ” Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him “Come and see” – John 1:46 Those 3 words right there – Come and See – has been bouncing around in my head for a couple of days now. In this 31 days series I have been looking for God to show up in my everyday mess of real life. I have seen him in the BIG things and in the small details of life. He has used everyday things to remind me of Him and my life in Him. I have discovered Him…

Day 17 -a psalm to read every night

psalm-46-10-be-still-and-know-that-i-am-god

This psalm has been stalking me for a couple of years. So this year I have decided to read it aloud every morning and every evening. There is one verse stuck in the middle of it that shouts out My One Word for 2016 – PAUSE I truly believe that this is an End Times psalm. A psalm that will take on special meaning and comfort as this last age draws to a close. The distant rumblings of a World War Three are started to swell. We need hope to hold onto. We need to speak out what is true…

Day 16-remembering to pray..everyday..

prayer-corrietenboom-quote

Here’s the bottom line – if we want to see God show up in our messy real lives – we need to pray. Bottom line. When I was younger, my concept of praying was sitting on my knees for hours at a time – before the sun come up, of course. It concerned me as a teenager that I wasn’t spending hours everyday. Until one day, I received a little glow in the dark cross picture which I tacked to the wall opposite my bed. Every night, once the lights were out, I would lie in bed staring at the…

Day 15 -if you had one day left to live…

I am not a very good friend. I admit it. Some people have the natural ability to be a good friend. But not me, I have to work at it. I suspect it has something to do with personality types and whether people drain you or energize you. But as I get older though (cough, cough – the other side of 45), I am beginning to value friends and family more. Recently I was asked the question – If you had ONE day left to live – how would you spend it? Most people, I think, would list some amazing…

Day 14 -God works in the tiny details of your life

The small things matter. God’s glory is seen in the tiny. Take the snowflake. Ice Crystals that fall from heaven. Every single small snowflake is unique. Each flake has a specially designed pattern. Just like our fingerprints, there are no two snowflakes alike. How did they get like that? Google tells me that their shapes emerge as the flakes move through different temperatures and humidity regions. What each snowflake has to pass through to get to the ground develops its unique structure and design. Yes! so much like us. God has made us all unique – from our DNA to…
