I am not a very good friend. I admit it.
Some people have the natural ability to be a good friend. But not me, I have to work at it.
I suspect it has something to do with personality types and whether people drain you or energize you.
But as I get older though (cough, cough – the other side of 45), I am beginning to value friends and family more.
Recently I was asked the question –
If you had ONE day left to live – how would you spend it?
Most people, I think, would list some amazing places to visit or adventurous activities to do.
My list seem boring – I would spend the 24 hours with my family and friends.
We would be having great conversation…
laughing till our bellies hurt and…
eating wonderful food.
It’s the ‘just being’ that attracts me compared to ‘do do do’.
I have put aside my task oriented nature and learn the rhythm of just being in the present.
Taking the time to enjoy every minute morsel that God gives me on this earth.
Deeply breathe in the fresh spring air.
Engage in regular dinner conversation with the teenagers.
Leave the city for a weekend and drive down those country lanes.
Share those funny stories.
Make fun memories.
Experience something awesome with the people I love.
That is God’s glory seen in the earth.
That is God working through people.
Dear God,
Thank you for friends and family. Help me to be fully present with them.
To talk, laugh and eat with them.
To see you working in their lives.
In the name of Jesus, Amen – so be it.
I would love to hear how you discover God in your messy real everyday life too – please leave a comment
