It’s a big statement, I know. But I think I have stumbled on THE ANSWER to how to do almost anything.
I’m the kind of person whose brain never stops talking – you know what I mean?
Always thinking.
Always questioning.
It drives my male dominated family nuts. (Ever asked a guy what they are thinking? …How can anybody think of nothing??)
Sometimes the questions and the thinking is in relation to new ideas, new goals or projects. Then I become paralysed and overwhelmed – where do I start?
Here’s some of the questions that I have had this year – see if you recognise any of your questions in the list:
- How do I lose weight?
- How do I gain the motivation to lose weight?
- How do I pause and enjoy the present?
- How do I find out what my calling is?
- How do I find my voice?
- How do I balance my work life, home life, friends, church…..?
- How do I write and publish a book?
- How do I find time to do the things I want to do but still keep everyone happy?
- How do I pay off our mortgage?
- How do I renovate our home ?
- How do I change my mindset?
- How do I change my eating lifestyle?
- How do I change my small thinking into big thinking?
- How do I take my marriage to another level?
- How do I stay on fire in my spiritual journey?
- How do I gain clarity in my life?
The questions just keep coming.
Or course I want to the answers to be simple and quick. But life isn’t like that, right? We all want the quick fix. The 5 steps to wealth (no, make it 3 steps!).
I have discovered that usually there is no simple 5 step answer to my questions, ideas or goals.
The answer to how to do almost anything is…..
….It’s a PROCESS
Yep, it’s not rocket science – but it is utterly freeing to know that I don’t have to have all the answers before I start …It’s a process!
I seem to always have my eye on the end game – the final result. I somehow expect to jump to the final goal without going through the journey.
Here are 3 parts to the process that I really need to embrace:
Discovery
The exciting and freeing aspect of the process is that while on the journey I discover the answers.
I have to just jump in and start the process of answering my questions on How To do something and just DO IT.
I need to trust the process. Enjoy the process.
I don’t have to have all the answers before I start a project or have an idea…The answers will be discovered in the journey.
This different mindset frees me from needing to have all the answers – or any of the answers at all.
Hard Work
The process involves not only discovery but hard work.
Most answers don’t just fall out of the sky.
Taking a marriage to another level or renovating a house takes hard work. Writing a book or losing weight takes sacrifice.
Sometimes I tend to forget that or have my head in the sand. I want an instant life just like instant noodles. But answers tend not to come after 2 minutes, right.
I have to steel my minds to the fact that answering my questions, reaching my goals requires hard work.
Time
The answer to how to do almost anything involves a PROCESS of TIME.
Time is needed to incubate any ideas and goals.
It is going to take longer than 6 weeks to lose 20 kilos! So far it has taken me 7 months to lose 16 kilos. But of course in losing weight it’s not the time that counts really is it? It is the fact that I am losing it forever. It is the fact that every month I am either staying the same or weigh less than before. I am changing a lifetime of eating habits that has caused weight gain – that doesn’t happen overnight.
It’s the concept of keep moving forward.
I mustn’t let the time it takes to accomplish something or find the answer to a problem put me off starting.
Here’s a quote that I have written on my September and August Monthly Goals Page in my journal:
Never give up on your dream just because of the TIME it will take to accomplish it. The TIME will pass anyway” Earl Nightingale.
So, I hope that this has helped you as much as it has helped me. I would love to read your comments – what are you current ” How do I” questions? Have you started the process of answering them?
