The My One Word concept has been the most influential personal improvement program that I have ever stuck with.
Here are some of the exciting results from My One Word experiments:
1. I’m More Super Sensitive to the Spiritual Side
I have heard more from God in the last 4 years with doing My One Word than in the past 40+ years of being a Christian!
This is quite a statement. It is true.
Maybe it is that I am more ‘in tune’ with God – because isn’t God always speaking to us?
My One Word improved my ability to identify God’s voice.
My receptive ability was honed.
2. Increased Spiritual Growth
Our relationship with God is a dynamic thing not a static position. It’s a growing process.
God uses loads of growth metaphors in the Word to describe this amazing relationship that He wants to have with us. Jesus is the vine, we are the branches. Branches don’t stay at a certain length or width. They are alive – they produce fruit and leaves. The gardener prunes them for more growth.
Growth is the whole idea. We hear from God – He touches His finger on a particular area in our lives that needs transformation – we listen and respond. Hopefully fruit appears from the connection – it’s really the abiding life.
3. Focus and Clarity
Focusing on my one word for a year produced considerable clarity.
Having clarity in your life is the beginning of true success.
It’s having an understanding of where you are at and what you need to do and become to get where you want to go.
It’s having insight into your personality – strengths and weaknesses.
Insight into the nature and character of God and how He works.
4. Purpose
My life is now filled with purpose.
With my one word focus, I have like a filter on for the year.
All experiences, sermons, books that I read, conversations that I have are filtered through my one word – unconsciously and consciously.
I start to see patterns and connections between events and situations in my life. Through these God is speaking.
There is a purpose to my journaling.
There is a purpose to my Bible reading.
I want to discover what God says about my one word.
I want to know how it relates to my daily life. But more than ‘know’ – I want God to transform me through my one word.
Do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs] but be transformed and progressively change [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [ focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes] so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [ in His plan and purpose for you]. Amplified Romans 12:2
Another translation says it this way ” Don’t let the world squeeze you into its own mould, but let God remould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity. ” (Phillips)
The one word process does exactly what Romans 12:2 is describing.
It is a tool that God can use to remould your mind from within.
The goal being to prove to yourself that God’s plan is good and to move you towards true maturity.
